Maino sang with the Resurrection Choir that lent support to artists who have sung at the Chicago Lyric Opera, San Fransisco Opera House and other major opera venues around the world. If you look closely, He is the 4th tenor in from the right. If you listen closely....you just may hear him on the rousing chorus of Toreador!

Solist Paul Radulescu,a wonderful Baritone sings with the choir assisting at St. Benedict's Church in Chicago. Listen carefully and enjoy!

The St. Benedict's Benefit Concert on Friday, Sept. 25th (8:00pm at ST. BENEDICT CHURCH 215 W. Irving Park Rd., Chicago, IL 60618). Features all those opera songs you love from the movies, television, and TV commercials (think DeBeer Diamonds TV commercials) Solists from the Lyric opera, San Francisco opera, Santa Fe opera, The Julliard School of Music, Curtis Institute, and other renowned institutions , as well as a choir composed to folks from the Apollo Choir , Romanian Madrigal Consort, St. Benedict and St. Bartholomew Churches will be singing opera arias, duets and rousing choruses for all to enjoy. Picturing Architecture Photography Tour at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House

Bring your camera for an in-depth interior and exterior tour of Wright's icon of modern architecture Sunday, October 18 at 9am. The photogenic building presents wonderful opportunities for professional and amateur photographers to explore one of the most famous architectural landmarks in the United States. Robie House is the quintessential Priarie style home with dramatic over-hangs, banded art-glass windows, centrally located Roman-brick fireplace and beautiful wood banding. Wright’s Robie House sparked a revolution in residential architecture whose influence still reverberates today. Designated by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 10 most significant structures of the 20^th century, this American treasure is celebrated as one of Chicago’s most important works of art.

Wright’s Robie House is located at 5757 S. Woodlawn Ave. in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. Tickets are $80 for Preservation Trust members and $90 for non-members. To allow for more personal interaction with the instructor and with the museum the maximum number of guests is 10 people. Advance ticket purchases are required. ...What are our tools in night photography?

Tripod. While not always necessary (see further on for how to cheat on this), a tripod will give you the greatest flexibility to get the angles you need while keeping your camera steady for those long exposures.

Wide-angle lenses. This is a personal preference, but I love the way they work in night photography. I use Canon’s 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 ($700), but if you can afford it I’d get the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II ($1300). If both of these are out of your price range – don’t worry! Try it out with whatever you’ve got as the only thing that will limit you is your imagination.

A lens hood. To minimize lens flares from light entering at angles outside of your frame.

A flashlight. Sometimes you’ll want to draw attention to or simply lighten up an important part of the foreground which is too dark.

Our imagination. Tools lie all around us in everyday objects to help us make our work better in this; I’ve used bicycle lamps, lampposts and newspaper boxes to get it ...

WCC photographers. Mark Southard and John Hewitt exhibited their works in a juried showing of local, regional and national artists.

This is not a class on how to use your computer. You must have basic computer skills such as: the ability to turn on and use your computer for basic tasks, to e-mail, to use your mouse, insert a CD or DVD into your computer and open files, know how to save files on your computer etc.
To take this class you must have a Laptop Computer with Adobe Photoshop Elements (6 or 7) already installed and ready to use on your computer.
You will learn how to maximize the look and appeal of everyday images and you’ll learn how to optimize photographic images to the level of fine art.
Topics will include understanding Photoshop Elements icons, tools, filters, resolution, file size, cropping, coloring, photo restoration, photo collages, converting color images to black and white, image sharpening for maximum print quality.

Chicago, IL -- Chicago Filmmakers presents a rare appearance by Hitoshi Toyoda, whose astonishing slideshows have been compared to a visual form of Haiku literature.

Existing between film and still photography, Hitoshi Toyoda's storytelling captures the ebb and flow of daily life, using vivid characters and stunning landscapes to reveal the rhythms of time and the meanings we make for ourselves. A self-taught photographer who has worked exclusively in the medium of slideshows for the past ten years, Toyoda has toured extensively both in the United States and Japan. He only exhibits his work in live contexts, clicking though the slides manually, as the black pauses between the pictures are as important as the pictures themselves. In 580 images taken between 2001 and 2002, NAZUNA documents his leaving New York City after the September 11 terrorist attacks for Tokyo, his childhood home, to see how his former world had changed.

This hands-on, two-day workshop is designed for the Beginner or Intermediate level photographer and a great way to take your skills to the next level.

“The Art Of Seeing” includes two field sessions where you can practice the photographic principles presented at the classroom lectures. During the field shoots you will have the opportunity to work one on one with professional photographers John Gregor and Randy Hagar. Use a Tripod

Anyone who wants sharp pictures should own a tripod. Steadying your camera with a tripod will increase picture sharpness--even when taking pictures at fast shutter speeds in the 1/125-1/500 sec range. This is especially true when shooting at telephoto settings, which magnify the effects of camera shake. If a tripod limits your mobility, try a monopod--it also enhances steadiness and picture sharpness. Some say monopods are not any good. Why do professional photographers at sporting events use them if they don't work.

Carbon fiber tripods offer sturdy shooting platforms but are lightweight. When buying a tripod be sure to check the recommended load limit for your heaviest needs. Also, get a tripod that will rise to at least your eye level when you are standing upright. You don't want to have crouch all the time. If in a store, try it out with your camera and largest lens. Try this, imagine a bird or animal high up in a tree. How will you match up with the tripod in that situation. Don't forget the other extreme. You may want to use your tripod for shots close to the ground. Try it out.

Always extend the legs first to get the height you want, and extend the center column as little as possible. Use a cable, electronic or remote release to minimize finger-induced shake. If you don't have a remote release, you can use your camera's timer to take the shot without touching the camera.

Practice opening and setting up you tripod quickly. Some shots are fleeting (birds & animals). A tripod is another tool in your photographic quiver.
Think about how you will carry your tripod while on assignment. Personally, I like to carry a backpack and can attach my tripod to the backpack. Can you carry your tripod with the camera attached as I sometimes do? This cuts down on setup time.

Here is another tip. Keep your attaching plate on your camera at all times. It will be one less thing you need to do in your setup. If you use more than one camera, invest in additional plates so you can use any camera at any time.

Remember, any tripod is better than no tripod.

Tripod heads are another separate subject for another time.

Hi,

I just wanted to send out a reminder that our next meeting will not be the first Monday of the month (the church has a special eventthat Monday).

We were on schedule to meet the third Monday but due to the need to have pictures for CACCA (which is the second Saturday ofthe month) Dominick checked into meeting the second Monday. There is nothing scheduled with the St. Bartholomew Church the second Monday to prevent us from meeting that day instead. So our next meeting will be Monday March 9th 2009 at the normal time of 6:30pm at St. Bart's.

Remember it is a competition meeting. Also, as those of you who were at the last meeting know, Mark challenged us to make a series of 4x6 prints (or postcards) to bring for a special in-house competition as well (If I remember correctly we were supposed to bring four. Do I have that right Mark?). I hope to see everyone there. I hope everyone is having a good and productive month.

A good friend of mine (Dominic Canderolo, PhD) will be giving a presentation about the video he helped to create called, And They Came to Chicago with a special segment on the various Italian/American neighborhoods in the Chicago-land area on Sat. Summer Art Show
in the Chandelier Room of Casa Italia on
Thursday evening August 7 at 7 PM 3800 Division St., Stone Park, IL.

More than twenty professional painters, sculptors and photographers are expected to show their works in this annual event which will run through mid September. Organizer Dominic Candeloro of the Casa Italia has invited artists of Italian background and those who depict Italian/Italian American themes to come together in a local display of the Renaissance.

Among the artists displaying their works are noted designer John Bucci, filmmaker-painter Tom Palazzolo, painters Julia Oemke, Nuccia Lucini, Anthony Panzica, Anna Pagnucci, John Bertucci, Claudia Pontarelli-Hallissey, Leemarie Gaimari Bonk, Nick Benero, Rita Dianni Kaleel and Horacio Baggio, sculptors Joseph Burlini and Robert Buono, and photographer (this blog's very own) Dominick M. Maino.

July – 14 Bailey Donnally will demonstrate his award winning techniques for combining images. His award winning photographs all look so natural that no one can really tell if he used more than one photo to produce these stunning images. Bailey will do this same workshop at PSA in Portland, OR this Fall. Bailey wins prints of the month, prints of the year, tops in PSA Salons around the world. His photographs are a creative work of art.

July – 28 Mark Southard (a member of the Wright Camera Club) will demonstrate techniques for getting better white balance in your camera and also introduce new techniques for Elements/Photoshop.Mark teaches in Door county WI, New England, PSA in Portland and in the Chicago area. Mark’s creative images are to die for.

August – 11 Bill Brown who has been a professional photographer since high school, will show his methods for making better selections. Selections can be very time consuming and frustrating for many of us. Bill is one of the leaders and founders of the Elgin, Fox Valley Camera Club and run a Summer instruction program on Tuesday nights. Bill was one of the innovators that started the Panoramic Division in CACCA’s 2008 Salon.

The DPI committee is offering a "Hands On" workshop at Washington Park Camera Club on
Tuesday August 12 at 7:00 PM. See the CACCA website for location of the club meeting. The Club meeting place is a very easy location to get to.

This will be a hands-on workshop, in which all participants go through the steps involved in conducting a DPI competition. Participants are to bring their own laptop, if they have one.
The workshop will be conducted using the software "Club Viewer" which runs on PC's or the latest MAC's that can run both PC and MAC software. Club Viewer is the software which will be used by the DPI committee to run all inter-club DPI competitions beginning in October.
It is recommended that you call or e-mail President Kathleen Sims (630-699-3780) if you and others from your club will be attending. The club needs to know for set-up table space. Kathleen's e-mail is: kathleensims@msn.com

A second workshop will be held in Lake Forest on September 15 for the North and a third workshop is scheduled at the Salt Creek Club in Countryside for October 15.

This hands on workshop on Digital Projected Images (DPI) will be held at Lake Forest College on Conducting a Digital Projected Image Competition.

The workshop will be at Lake Forest College, 555 N. Sheridan Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045. It will be held in the Johnson Science Center, Room 100, starting at 7:00 PM. Nobody should expect to find a sign on Sheridan Road displaying the street number, 555. The street numbers numbers are not displayed at the college. However, the main entrance to Lake Forest College is at the intersection of N. Sheridan Road and College Road. I have put fairly detailed instructions about how to get to the college and to the Johnson Science Center on the Web at:

June – 23 Fred Drury will demonstrate various software/hardware packages used to calibrate and profile your monitor and projectors. Fred teaches at Co llege of DuPage and is a regular contributing author on digital imaging to the PSA Journal.

July – 14 Bailey Donnally will demonstrate his award winning techniques for combining images. His award winning photographs all look so natural that no one can really tell if he used more than one photo to produce these stunning images. Bailey will do this same workshop at PSA in Portland, OR this Fall. Bailey wins prints of the month, prints of the year, tops in PSA Salons around the world. His photographs are a creative work of art.

July – 28 Mark Southard will demonstrate techniques for getting better white balance in your camera and also introduce new techniques for Elements/Photoshop.
Mark teaches in Door county WI, New England, PSA in Portland and in the Chicago area. Mark’s creative images are to die for.

August – 11 Bill Brown who has been a professional photographer since high school, will show his methods for making better selections. Selections can be very time consuming and frustrating for many of us. Bill is one of the leaders and founders of the Elgin, Fox Valley Camera Club and run a Summer instruction program on Tuesday nights. Bill was one of the innovators that started the Panoramic Division in CACCA’s 2008 Salon.

Dear Photography Club,

We apologize for contacting you a second time. We recently contacted you as digitalandfilmgallery however we have made some changes prior to our upcoming August grand opening and one of the changes has been to our name. Our name is now Effe Leven Gallery. Also our website is now active at http://www.effelevengallery.com

In addition, we have had lots of contact since our previous email regarding exhibiting in our gallery and are now offering photography club members, students, and hobbyists FREE exhibit space for our grand opening. We are waiving the $125.00 exhibit fee, however, a $25.00 wall maintenance fee is required to cover hole repair and wall repainting expenses. And as is customary, the gallery will receive a sales commission on all work sold through our exhibits.

Each photographer will receive 25 square feet of wall space (5'x5) to exhibit their photography.
Please let your club members know as soon as possible of this free offer as we would like to have them as part of our August grand opening.

Looking to Buy a Digital SLR?

If you are looking to buy a digital single lens reflex camera, but do not want to break out the piggy bank....make the Fort Knox. Then you might want to consider the Canon Rebel Xsi. I started with the Rebel XT and was very happy with its performance. There are some major differences, imporvments, and changes in the Rebel Xsi....so read this review carefully.

I did a quick search and found out that it costs anywhere from about $400 (body only) up to about $1000 with lenses.

Leica M8 Field Test, Iraq

....I will try to make this review as comprehensive as possible with samples of the work I have done with the three M8’s that I have used. This will allow others a detailed look at my experiences with the M8, most of which have been negative. Please keep in mind that there are many other photographers who like the M8.....

Fun with stereographic photography

Comment: I'm not sure if any of the members of the Wright Camera Club do stereo-photography....but here's an explanation that's pretty simple to follow....as an optometrist who specialized in binocular vision I find this topic interesting. The author of this website notes that 10-15% of the population won't see the stereo affect...that's probably because they have some eye coordingation problems....if the eyes do not work well together, stereopsis (AKA 3D vision) is the first to suffer. Take a look and let me know if you've tried producing any stereo photos and how it worked out! Dominick Maino

Can Now Post Comment’s in Photo Gallery

We can now add comments for image’s in our photo gallery. What a great way to give each other our thoughts, tips and encouragement on each other’s images. This can be a great forum to learn from each other. You can post comment’s for a photographer’s image’s by clicking on an image in the photographer’s album and click on the post comments link. Also if you see a small white balloon on the lower right side in your image in your photo album that means you have comments for that image and just click on that image to view your comments. To see an example click on the first image in Dominick's photo album.
