Chicago Filmmakers presents

Visual Artist Hitoshi Toyoda

Featuring Toyoda’s live 35mm slideshow NAZUNA

Friday, April 3 at 8 pm

Chicago, IL -- Chicago Filmmakers presents a rare appearance by Hitoshi Toyoda, whose astonishing slideshows have been compared to a visual form of Haiku literature.

Existing between film and still photography, Hitoshi Toyoda's storytelling captures the ebb and flow of daily life, using vivid characters and stunning landscapes to reveal the rhythms of time and the meanings we make for ourselves. A self-taught photographer who has worked exclusively in the medium of slideshows for the past ten years, Toyoda has toured extensively both in the United States and Japan. He only exhibits his work in live contexts, clicking though the slides manually, as the black pauses between the pictures are as important as the pictures themselves. In 580 images taken between 2001 and 2002, NAZUNA documents his leaving New York City after the September 11 terrorist attacks for Tokyo, his childhood home, to see how his former world had changed.

The program is 90 minutes in length. For a preview, visit: www.hitoshitoyoda.com

This screening will take place at Chicago Filmmakers, located at 5243 N. Clark St. in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood. Single admission prices are $8 for general admission, $7 for students with a valid I.D, and $4 for CF members.

Chicago Art of Seeing Photography Workshop

This workshop will hone your photographic skills and develop your personal photographic vision. ColdSnap Photography, in cooperation with Calumet Photographic and the Lincoln Park REI, is proud to announce the Chicago “Art Of Seeing” May 2-3, 2009.  This hands-on, two-day workshop is designed for the Beginner or Intermediate level photographer and a great way to take your skills to the next level.

“The Art Of Seeing” includes two field sessions where you can practice the photographic principles presented at the classroom lectures. During the field shoots you will have the opportunity to work one on one with professional photographers John Gregor and Randy Hagar. Your photography from these sessions will be reviewed in an honest and supportive atmosphere where you can learn from successes as well as mistakes.

The repetitive sequence of classroom and field shoots is an extension of our teaching philosophy which is based upon the belief that learning through experience is the most thorough and enjoyable process of learning. We will cover all the basic camera functions of a digital SLR type camera, fundamentals of the digital photographic medium, and most importantly how to SEE photographs. The workshop is limited to 25 participants. Classroom presentations will be held at the downtown Calumet store and Lincoln Park REI.

Tuition is $199.00 and includes a complete set of notes.
