Photography 101 For The Holiday Season

...The 2008 holiday season only comes around once, but the memories can live on through treasured photographs of family and friends.
Snapping pictures of your loved ones is easier than you might think. Keeping a few tips in mind can make a big difference in the images you create.
Even after almost eight years of working as a photographer at the Opelika-Auburn News, Cliff Williams still has to remind himself of a few key practices such as getting down at the level of his subject, if needed, and
paying attention to what's behind his subjects.
"You don't want a poinsettia, fern or
Christmas tree coming out of the top of a head," Williams said....

Comments: Types we all should pay attention too....no matter how good we are with that camera! DM

Pictures from the CACCA meeting

Wright Camera Club at CACCA 12-08

The Wright Camera Club had an opportunity as a group to be recognized by the Chicago Area Camera Club Association which has most Chicago area clubs as members. Many of these camera clubs have websites that will allow you to log on and take a look at what they offer. But of course think Wright Camera Club has not only the best website but the best of everything.

WCC members wore their new WCC T-shirts made up by Mark Southard (thanks Mark) and we all looked pretty spiffy!!

Counterfeit Canon lithium-ion batteries and chargers

Click on title for pictures of real and counterfeit batteries/chargers. For more pics click here. DM

It has been confirmed that counterfeit Canon lithium-ion batteries and chargers for Canon digital cameras and digital video camcorders are in circulation. In addition, it has been reported that counterfeit batteries have been considered the cause of some battery ruptures.
In many cases, counterfeit batteries and chargers are not equipped with protective devices required to meet international quality standards. Therefore, when these batteries or chargers are used or charged, they can cause abnormal heat or leakage, ignition, rupture and other malfunctions in the batteries, chargers, and digital cameras and video camcorders. There is concern that, in the worst case, not only could digital cameras and digital video camcorders be damaged, but fire, burns, blindness and other severe accidents could occur. Thus, to ensure customer safety, we urge our customers not to use counterfeit devices.

Please be advised that Canon is not responsible, and will not be liable, for any malfunctions, damages or injuries caused by non-Canon genuine lithium-ion batteries and/or battery chargers including, without limitation, counterfeit devices.

Recently, both in Japan and overseas, counterfeits of Canon's genuine lithium-ion battery packs and chargers have been frequently offered for sale on the Internet. Accordingly, please use caution when purchasing Canon lithium-ion battery packs and chargers on the Internet to ensure that they are genuine Canon brand.

Canon's genuine lithium-ion batteries have security labels on their packaging that identify them as genuine Canon products. When purchasing battery packs, please refer to this information. (See the following image for the labels.)

A Cloning Primer

Use these tips to master the subtle power of the Clone Stamp tool

Sensors Exposed

At the heart of every digital camera is an image sensor, a silicon chip that contains millions of tiny light-sensitive photodiodes. Each photodiode produces a pixel of the captured image, and the number of pixels (resolution) is the horsepower spec that gets the most attention. However, the quality of the final image isn’t determined by the number of pixels alone. When comparing cameras and their sensor specs, you need to do more than merely count megapixels—there’s a lot more about sensors that you’ll want to consider.

Washington Park Camera Club Hands On Workshop

The DPI committee is offering a "Hands On" workshop at Washington Park Camera Club on
Tuesday August 12 at 7:00 PM. See the CACCA website for location of the club meeting. The Club meeting place is a very easy location to get to.

This will be a hands-on workshop, in which all participants go through the steps involved in conducting a DPI competition. Participants are to bring their own laptop, if they have one.
The workshop will be conducted using the software "Club Viewer" which runs on PC's or the latest MAC's that can run both PC and MAC software. Club Viewer is the software which will be used by the DPI committee to run all inter-club DPI competitions beginning in October.
It is recommended that you call or e-mail President Kathleen Sims (630-699-3780) if you and others from your club will be attending. The club needs to know for set-up table space. Kathleen's e-mail is: kathleensims@msn.com

A second workshop will be held in Lake Forest on September 15 for the North and a third workshop is scheduled at the Salt Creek Club in Countryside for October 15.
The first CACCA - DPI inter club competition is scheduled for October 27 in Des Plaines.

This hands on workshop on Digital Projected Images (DPI) will be held at Lake Forest College on Conducting a Digital Projected Image Competition.

The workshop will be at Lake Forest College, 555 N. Sheridan Road, Lake Forest, IL 60045. It will be held in the Johnson Science Center, Room 100, starting at 7:00 PM. Nobody should expect to find a sign on Sheridan Road displaying the street number, 555. The street numbers numbers are not displayed at the college. However, the main entrance to Lake Forest College is at the intersection of N. Sheridan Road and College Road. I have put fairly detailed instructions about how to get to the college and to the Johnson Science Center on the Web at:
http://www.lakeforest.edu/~donnally/directions .

A good map of Lake Forest College campus can be found at:
http://www.lakeforest.edu/about/community/map.asp .

On this map, the place we will have the workshop is number 10.
Bailey Donnally

This will be a hands-on workshop, in which all participants go through the steps involved in conducting a DPI competition. Participants are to bring their own laptop, if they have one. But if anyone doesn't have a portable computer or prefers not to bring it, Bailey can provide a desktop for you and members of your club to use. Bailey will need to know in advance if someone wants to take advantage of this offer because he will need to install the appropriate software on the computers, and profile it in advance. Contact Bailey Donnally at: bdonnally@sbcglobal.net in advance if you will need to use one of the college computers.

It is also recommended that you give Bailey and e-mail that you and how many others from your club are coming for a set-up chair count.

The workshop will be conducted using the software "Club Viewer" which runs on PC's or the latest MAC's that can run both PC and MAC software. Club Viewer is the software which will be used by the DPI committee to run all inter-club DPI competitions beginning in October.

Click on the title above to see all the photography contests that are available. Let the club know if you find any of particular interest.....and, as always, watch out for any scams!

Looking to Buy a Digital SLR?

If you are looking to buy a digital single lens reflex camera, but do not want to break out the piggy bank....make the Fort Knox. Then you might want to consider the Canon Rebel Xsi. I started with the Rebel XT and was very happy with its performance. There are some major differences, imporvments, and changes in the Rebel Xsi....so read this review carefully.

I did a quick search and found out that it costs anywhere from about $400 (body only) up to about $1000 with lenses.

Click on the title of the article for a review of the Canon Xsi. DM

Leica M8 Field Test, Iraq

....I will try to make this review as comprehensive as possible with samples of the work I have done with the three M8’s that I have used. This will allow others a detailed look at my experiences with the M8, most of which have been negative. Please keep in mind that there are many other photographers who like the M8.....

Comments:The Reviewer uses the Leica M8 in a difficult environment and reports on how well it does the job. DM

Test

Just trying out being a blog author on this blog. I wanted to make sure I set up everything to my satisfaction (and that it actually worked). The blog looks fantastic guys!

Fun Things to Do with Your Photographs: Dumpr

Dumpr is a place to submit your photos if you want to turn them into museum pieces or puzzles. It's online fun ..... create Rubrick's Cubes of your photos...and more. Some of its free...other parts $$$ cost. It's all fun. Dominick Maino

Thanks Dominick!

I would like to thank Dominick for putting together this great blog for the club. This a great addition and tool next to our website. It's amazing how fast this all came together with the help and hard work of the membership. I know our club will achieve great things and our goals. Thanks everyone for the hard work and commitment. Thanks again to Dominick our Blog Master for the great blog. I hope everyone will post comments and articles and lets make this blog a great success like our website.

Fun with stereographic photography

...Stereographic photography (or stereo photography for short) involves taking two slightly different pictures of the same scene so that viewing them in a certain way produces a 3-dimensional image. ...

Comment: I'm not sure if any of the members of the Wright Camera Club do stereo-photography....but here's an explanation that's pretty simple to follow....as an optometrist who specialized in binocular vision I find this topic interesting. The author of this website notes that 10-15% of the population won't see the stereo affect...that's probably because they have some eye coordingation problems....if the eyes do not work well together, stereopsis (AKA 3D vision) is the first to suffer. Take a look and let me know if you've tried producing any stereo photos and how it worked out! Dominick Maino

Videos of Wright Camera Club

I added (on the right) a link for videos of Wright Camera Club members doing "stuff". This first video is of an artist's reception after a concert at St. Bartholomew Church. This exhibition features the work of Mark Southard, Garry Mosebach and myself.

Can Now Post Comment’s in Photo Gallery

We can now add comments for image’s in our photo gallery. What a great way to give each other our thoughts, tips and encouragement on each other’s images. This can be a great forum to learn from each other. You can post comment’s for a photographer’s image’s by clicking on an image in the photographer’s album and click on the post comments link. Also if you see a small white balloon on the lower right side in your image in your photo album that means you have comments for that image and just click on that image to view your comments. To see an example click on the first image in Dominick's photo album.
